Using Watches or Variables

hi,
on trying to debug my python it's not possible to see current values in the watches section or variables section.
everything is still empty, hovering shows up: no current context

mouse hovering on the code lines brings up more data: <class 'xyz' > current values
output is also written.

Q: why no data in the watches/variables list?
