Any plans to support more types? If so, any eta?

Tried both SingleNamespace and OwnNamespace but they are not supported.

The support only for AllNamespaces was decided for two main reasons.

1. CRDs are cluster-scoped themselves in Kubernetes and installation of the same operator (or different versions of it) in multiple namespaces can lead to compatibility issues or conflicts.
2. The upcoming version of the Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLMv1) will itself only support cluster-scoped operators. There is some more information on that here.

I hope that helps, although I realize it may not be the answer you're hoping for. What is the driver behind using namespace-scoping of the operator in your case?

The reason I ask, is that we only run kafka in one namespace. And also will only run the kafka-console in the same namespace as kafka. So running the kafka console operator in all namespaces just seems like a waste of resources.. :)

Got it. Even in the case of an AllNamespaces installation, the operator will only have a single pod. It just will "watch" all namespaces for Console CRs. If you're only creating it in one namespace, I'd expect the resource usage difference to be minimal.
