What steps will reproduce the bug?

Hello, I'm trying to corss compile NodeJS on Ubuntu aarch64 ( a virtual machine on Apple chip ) for x64.

./configure --dest-cpu=x64 --dest-os=linux --cross-compiling --shared-zlib --shared-openssl --shared-nghttp2 --shared-cares --with-intl=none --prefix=/usr
make -C out BUILDTYPE=Release V=s

And then I got a g++ error error: unrecognized command line option ‘-m64’:

I would guess you're not using an appropriate compiler.

@mscdex I use g++ provided by Ubuntu apt package manage tool.

I find that g++ support -m option on x64 but not on aarch64. Meybe this is the root cause why NodeJS fails to build.

@malash If you're compiling on aarch64 for x86_64, you need to use the right cross-compiler. Set the following environment variables: AR_target, CC_target, CXX_target, LINK_target (can be the same as CXX_target)

@bnoordhuis Yes, in fact I'm cross compiling an OpenWRT project and its toolchain can set suitable environments for NodeJS.

I tried to remove some -m64 in common.gypi and deps/npm/node_modules/node-gyp/gyp/pylib/gyp/generator/ninja.py then the g++ does work.

But saidly I meet another problem #37309 (comment) . It seems there is no way to corss compile x64 nor any other non-aarch64 target on an aarch64 platform.

So now I have to close the issue and hope one day NodeJS / V8 could remove the limitation.

On the arm64 machine or container, install x86-64-linux-gnu-gcc , debian:bookworm is what I'm using.

# apt-get install g++-x86-64-linux-gnu libc6-dev-amd64-cross

Maybe you need to install other amd64 libs

# dpkg --add-architecture amd64 
# apt-get update
# apt-get install libjpeg-dev:amd64
