It would be very helpful if you could test the resulting artifacts from this PR and let us know in a comment if this change resolves your issue. Thank you!

Issue Details

  • TapGestureRecognizer on a CollectionView does not fire on Android, but works correctly on Windows and iOS.

Root Cause of the issue

  • On Android, SelectableViewHolder calls itemView.SetOnClickListener(this) on each CollectionView/ListView item view, which implicitly sets Clickable = true. During Android's touch dispatch, a clickable child view consumes the MotionEvent by returning true from OnTouchEvent(). This prevents the parent CollectionView's Touch event handler (platformView.Touch += OnPlatformViewTouched in GesturePlatformManager) from ever receiving the event. As a result, the gesture system never processes touches on CollectionView items, and TapGestureRecognizer (including double-tap) never fires.

Description of Change

Gesture handling improvements for RecyclerView-based views

  • Added a specialized GestureItemTouchListener class that forwards touch events from RecyclerView to the gesture system before child views handle them, ensuring TapGestureRecognizer works reliably on CollectionView and ListView.
  • Updated SetupGestures() to use AddOnItemTouchListener for RecyclerView views instead of the standard Touch event, preventing child item views from blocking gesture events.
  • Implemented ClearRecyclerViewTouchListener() to properly remove and dispose of the touch listener when gestures are reset or the element changes, avoiding memory leaks and duplicate event handling. [1] [2]

Test coverage

  • Added a new sample test page (Issue5825.cs) that demonstrates the fix by requiring a double-tap gesture on a CollectionView and updating a label if the gesture fires.
  • Introduced a UI test (Issue5825.cs) that verifies the double-tap gesture command fires as expected in a CollectionView on Android.

Dependency update

  • Imported AndroidX.RecyclerView.Widget to support the new gesture handling logic for RecyclerView-based views.

Issues Fixed

Fixes #5825

Tested the behaviour in the following platforms

  • - Windows
  • - Android
  • - iOS
  • - Mac

Issue: #5825 - [Android] TapGestureRecognizer doesn't fire
PR: #34497 - [Android] Fix for TapGestureRecognizer doesn't fire
Author: HarishwaranVijayakumar (community ✨, partner/syncfusion)
Platforms Affected: Android only
Files Changed: 1 implementation, 2 test

Key Findings

  • Root cause: On Android, SelectableViewHolder.SetOnClickListener(this) makes each CollectionView item view clickable. When a clickable child processes a MotionEvent, it returns true from OnTouchEvent(), consuming the event so it never propagates to the parent RecyclerView's Touch event handler (which GesturePlatformManager registers). TapGestureRecognizer thus never fires.
  • Fix approach: Replace the Touch event subscription on RecyclerView instances with AddOnItemTouchListener. The listener's OnInterceptTouchEvent fires BEFORE children get the event, so gestures are forwarded to manager.OnTouchEvent(e) unconditionally. Returns false so child item selection continues to work.
  • New class: GestureItemTouchListener : Java.Lang.Object, RecyclerView.IOnItemTouchListener — sealed, minimal, guarded by _manager._disposed check.
  • Cleanup path: ClearRecyclerViewTouchListener() removes/disposes the listener; called in SetupGestures() (before re-subscribing) and SetupElement() (on disconnect).
  • Import added: AndroidX.RecyclerView.Widget.
  • Gate result: ❌ FAILED — but failure was due to ADB infrastructure error ("Broken pipe" during PushAndInstallPackageAsync) on the "without-fix" run, not a test logic failure. The "with fix" run ✅ PASSED. This is an infrastructure flake, not evidence the test is broken.
  • Prior agent review: Found in PR comments at commit f9d8fa8 — previously approved. This run is a re-review triggered by the gate failure.
  • Copilot inline review comments: (1) Comment about ListView wording — addressed by author. (2) Racy assertion on ResultLabel — author updated to WaitForTextToBePresentInElement("ResultLabel", "Success").

Code Review Concerns

  • _recyclerViewTouchListener field declared as GestureItemTouchListener? — this is fine and allows direct .Dispose() call.
  • _manager._disposed is accessed from GestureItemTouchListener.OnInterceptTouchEvent_disposed is a field of the outer class, accessed without a lock, but this is acceptable for a simple boolean flag.
  • No handling for the case where Control changes from non-RecyclerView to RecyclerView mid-lifecycle — existing SetupGestures() call on element change covers this.
  • _recyclerViewTouchListener field declared in base partial class body, but the RecyclerView check is Android-only in the Android partial — minor architecture concern, contained within the Android file.

Test Coverage

  • HostApp page (Issue5825.cs): CollectionView with 5 items, double-tap TapGestureRecognizer (NumberOfTapsRequired=2), AutomationId="CollectionViewItem" on item Label, AutomationId="ResultLabel" on result Label. PlatformAffected.Android.
  • UI test (Issue5825.cs): DoubleTapInCollectionViewShouldFireCommand — waits for CollectionViewItem, double-taps it, then calls WaitForTextToBePresentInElement("ResultLabel", "Success"). Category: Gestures.

🔧 Fix — Analysis & Comparison

Fix Candidates

# Source Approach Test Result Files Changed Notes
1 try-fix (claude-opus-4.6) Per-child IOnTouchListener via AddOnChildAttachStateChangeListener — hooks each child view, forwards events to gesture system before child's onTouchEvent() ✅ PASS GesturePlatformManager.Android.cs Different level: child-level vs PR's parent-level intercept
2 try-fix (claude-sonnet-4.6) Disable child Clickable via AddOnChildAttachStateChangeListener — removes root cause of event blocking, touch propagates naturally to RecyclerView ✅ PASS GesturePlatformManager.Android.cs Trade-off: removes native item click mechanism; simpler but risky for item selection
3 try-fix (gpt-5.3-codex) SetOnTouchListener on RecyclerView that forwards to OnTouchEvent and returns false — fires in dispatchTouchEvent before children ✅ PASS GesturePlatformManager.Android.cs Similar to PR but uses SetOnTouchListener instead of IOnItemTouchListener
4 try-fix (gpt-5.4) DispatchTouchEvent override in MauiRecyclerView forwarding to GesturePlatformManager callback ✅ PASS GesturePlatformManager.Android.cs, MauiRecyclerView.cs, PublicAPI.Unshipped.txt Modifies more files — touches public API and RecyclerView subclass
PR PR #34497 GestureItemTouchListener via AddOnItemTouchListener on RecyclerView — OnInterceptTouchEvent fires before children, forwards to gesture system, returns false ✅ PASS (with fix, infra flake on without-fix run) GesturePlatformManager.Android.cs Original PR

Report ✅ COMPLETE

Summary

PR #34497 fixes a long-standing Android bug (open since April 2022) where TapGestureRecognizer on a CollectionView never fires. The fix is correct, minimal, and well-structured. The Gate ❌ FAILED due to an ADB infrastructure error (Broken pipe / Failure calling service package) during the "without-fix" app installation — not a test logic failure. The "with fix" run ✅ PASSED. All 4 try-fix candidates also passed tests, confirming the bug is real and the general approach is sound. The PR's fix is the best of all candidates.

Root Cause

On Android, SelectableViewHolder.SetOnClickListener(this) sets Clickable = true on each RecyclerView item view. When a clickable child view processes a MotionEvent, it returns true from onTouchEvent(), consuming the event. The parent RecyclerView's Touch event handler (registered by GesturePlatformManager via platformView.Touch += OnPlatformViewTouched) never receives the event, so all gesture recognizers on the CollectionView silently fail.

Fix Quality

The PR's fix is optimal among all candidates explored:

Candidate Approach Files Risk Quality
PR #34497 IOnItemTouchListener.OnInterceptTouchEvent — fires before children, returns false 1 Low ✅ Best
Attempt 1 Per-child IOnTouchListener via AddOnChildAttachStateChangeListener 1 Medium ✅ Works, more complex
Attempt 2 Disable child Clickable 1 High ⚠️ May break item selection
Attempt 3 SetOnTouchListener on RecyclerView 1 Medium ✅ Works but single-listener limit
Attempt 4 DispatchTouchEvent override in MauiRecyclerView 3 Medium ✅ Works but touches public API

Why PR's fix is best:

  • Uses the correct Android API: RecyclerView.IOnItemTouchListener.OnInterceptTouchEvent is explicitly designed to observe touches before children get them — it's the canonical solution for this pattern
  • Returns false (non-intercepting) — child item selection/click continues to work normally
  • Minimal surface area: 1 file, sealed inner class, proper Dispose(), clear cleanup path
  • _disposed guard prevents late callbacks after manager is disposed
  • Well-commented explaining the rationale

Gate failure assessment: The gate failure is an infrastructure flake. The ADB Broken Pipe (32) error is a known transient Android emulator/adb communication issue unrelated to the fix or test logic. The "with fix" run passed cleanly in 525s. The test itself (WaitForTextToBePresentInElement) is correctly written following the review comment fix (not racy).

Minor concerns (non-blocking):

  • The PR was previously marked [WIP] but the title has been updated — title no longer contains [WIP].
  • No regression concern for non-RecyclerView views — the else branch preserves original Touch += OnPlatformViewTouched behavior.

Selected Fix: PR #34497 — PR's fix is the best among all candidates.

Pull request overview

Fixes Android gesture routing for RecyclerView-backed controls so TapGestureRecognizer (including double-tap) can fire even when item views are clickable and consume touch events.

Changes:

  • Route gesture touch handling for RecyclerView through a new RecyclerView.IOnItemTouchListener (instead of View.Touch) to observe events before child item views consume them.
  • Add cleanup logic to remove/dispose the RecyclerView touch listener when resetting gestures / changing elements.
  • Add a HostApp repro page and an Appium UI test for issue #5825 (double-tap on a CollectionView item updates a result label).

### Issue Details

- TapGestureRecognizer on a CollectionView does not fire on Android, but
works correctly on Windows and iOS.

### Root Cause of the issue

- On Android, SelectableViewHolder calls
itemView.SetOnClickListener(this) on each CollectionView/ListView item
view, which implicitly sets Clickable = true. During Android's touch
dispatch, a clickable child view consumes the MotionEvent by returning
true from OnTouchEvent(). This prevents the parent CollectionView's
Touch event handler (platformView.Touch += OnPlatformViewTouched in
GesturePlatformManager) from ever receiving the event. As a result, the
gesture system never processes touches on CollectionView items, and
TapGestureRecognizer (including double-tap) never fires.

### Description of Change

### Gesture handling improvements for RecyclerView-based views

* Added a specialized `GestureItemTouchListener` class that forwards
touch events from `RecyclerView` to the gesture system before child
views handle them, ensuring `TapGestureRecognizer` works reliably on
`CollectionView` and `ListView`.
* Updated `SetupGestures()` to use `AddOnItemTouchListener` for
`RecyclerView` views instead of the standard `Touch` event, preventing
child item views from blocking gesture events.
* Implemented `ClearRecyclerViewTouchListener()` to properly remove and
dispose of the touch listener when gestures are reset or the element
changes, avoiding memory leaks and duplicate event handling.

### Test coverage

* Added a new sample test page (`Issue5825.cs`) that demonstrates the
fix by requiring a double-tap gesture on a `CollectionView` and updating
a label if the gesture fires.
* Introduced a UI test (`Issue5825.cs`) that verifies the double-tap

touch events from `RecyclerView` to the gesture system before child
views handle them, ensuring `TapGestureRecognizer` works reliably on
`CollectionView` and `ListView`.
* Updated `SetupGestures()` to use `AddOnItemTouchListener` for
`RecyclerView` views instead of the standard `Touch` event, preventing
child item views from blocking gesture events.

* Introduced a UI test (`Issue5825.cs`) that verifies the double-tap
gesture command fires as expected in a `CollectionView` on Android.

### Dependency update

* Imported `AndroidX.RecyclerView.Widget` to support the new gesture
handling logic for RecyclerView-based views.

### Issue Details

- TapGestureRecognizer on a CollectionView does not fire on Android, but
works correctly on Windows and iOS.

### Root Cause of the issue

- On Android, SelectableViewHolder calls
itemView.SetOnClickListener(this) on each CollectionView/ListView item
view, which implicitly sets Clickable = true. During Android's touch
dispatch, a clickable child view consumes the MotionEvent by returning
true from OnTouchEvent(). This prevents the parent CollectionView's
Touch event handler (platformView.Touch += OnPlatformViewTouched in
GesturePlatformManager) from ever receiving the event. As a result, the
gesture system never processes touches on CollectionView items, and
TapGestureRecognizer (including double-tap) never fires.
